The award was first given following the 1996–97 season, the first year of the conference's existence, to Roy Williams of Kansas.

Rick Barnes of Texas and Bill Self of Kansas both have won the most awards with three apiece. Four other coaches have won the award twice.

Three coaches have won Big 12 Coach of the Year in the same season that they have also won a National Coach of the Year Award – Roy Williams, Larry Eustachy and Bill Self. Kansas has the most Big 12 Coach of the Year Awards with four while Texas is second with three. As of 2011, the award has been given 15 times in 15 seasons.
