The Big 12 Conference (sometimes known as the Big XII) is a conference participating in the NCAA's Division I, with member institutions in Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia. It was founded in 1996, the result of a merger between the Big Eight Conference and four schools from the Southwest Conference (SWC).
The conference's membership did not change in its first 15 years, but underwent major changes during the early-2010s realignment cycle, with four charter members leaving. Colorado and Nebraska left in 2011, respectively for the Pac-12 Conference and Big Ten Conference. The following year, Missouri and Texas A&M left for the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The latter two were replaced by TCU, a former SWC member that had been left out of the merger that formed the Big 12, and West Virginia.
In 2021, the conference was shaken by the announcement that two of its mainstays, Oklahoma and Texas, would leave for the SEC no later than 2025; their departure was later confirmed for 2024. The Big 12 would regroup by raiding the American Athletic Conference, inviting Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF to move to the Big 12. After negotiations between The American and its departing members, a departure date of July 2023 was settled on. Also in 2023, the Big 12 added BYU, which played football as an independent in the top tier of NCAA football, the Football Bowl Subdivision, and was a member of the non-football West Coast Conference in most other sports. The Big 12 would later raid the collapsing Pac-12 Conference, first announcing that former member Colorado would rejoin in 2024, and then announcing that Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah would join at that time.
