The Big 12 Conference (sometimes known as the Big XII) is a conference participating in the NCAA's Division I, with member institutions in Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and West Virginia. It was founded in 1996, the result of a merger between the Big Eight Conference and four schools from the Southwest Conference (SWC).
The conference's membership did not change in its first 15 years, but underwent major changes during the early-2010s realignment cycle, with four charter members leaving. Colorado and Nebraska left in 2011, respectively for the Pac-12 Conference and Big Ten Conference. The following year, Missouri and Texas A&M left for the Southeastern Conference. The latter two were replaced by TCU, a former SWC member that had been left out of the merger that formed the Big 12, and West Virginia.
