Origins[]

Burnie has been the mascot of the Miami Heat ever since they were founded in 1988. Created by the team's original owner Ted Arison, he was meant to be a fun and lovable mascot who could connect with fans and spread positive messages of the team and community involvement. Burnie’s costume is a full body suit. The body consists of orange fur and orange hair feathers. Burnie’s "nose" is a green basketball. Burnie wears the Miami Heat jersey number 0 (or 00), and although Burnie usually wears a black jersey, it has also worn the Heat's red and white jersey for playoff promotions. He sometimes wears a white team T-shirt. During the 2012 NBA Playoffs, Burnie's costume was temporarily changed to an all-white version of the same suit, with black trim around the jersey text, in keeping with the team's "White Hot Playoffs" motto.
