The California Vulcans, often referred to in print as "California (PA)" to avoid confusion with the California Golden Bears of NCAA Division I, represent Pennsylvania Western University California, branded academically as PennWest California, in NCAA Division II sports. The Vulcans are members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Before the 2022–23 school year, the university was known as California University of Pennsylvania. At that time, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), which governs most PSAC members, merged California with two other PASSHE institutions in Western Pennsylvania, namely Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. All three became campuses of the new Pennsylvania Western University. The NCAA approved the continued existence of separate athletic programs at the three PennWest campuses.
