Florida Gulf Coast University is a public, four-year university located in Fort Myers, Florida. Commonly referred to FGCU or Florida Gulf Coast, the coeducational university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degrees. The athletic teams are known as the Eagles.

On May 10, 2006, FGCU gained membership to the NCAA Atlantic Sun Conference starting with the 2007-08 academic year, when FGCU moved to NCAA Division I status.

On March 24, 2007, FGCU women's basketball team ended their 35-1 season with a loss in the NCAA Division II Women's Tournament Championship to the Southern Connecticut State Fighting Owls.
