Flowers Hall opened in 1972 and has served as the home court for the University of North Alabama volleyball and men's and women’s basketball teams. The 2,223-seat venue has been home to multiple NBA and NCAA tournament games, as well as the Alabama/Mississippi High School All-Star Basketball Game on odd numbered years from 1991 to 2001.
The first basketball game played in Flowers Hall was on Oct. 5, 1972, when the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks battled in an exhibition game before a crowd that overflowed the capacity of the new facility. Since then, two other NBA games have taken place at Flowers Hall in the 1970’s.
Since the 1978-79 season, the Lion women’s basketball team has posted an impressive 301-137 record in Flowers Hall.
Flowers Hall also played host to the women’s NCAA Division II South Region championship game in the 1984-85 season, with Mercer University defeating the Lions 90-86 in overtime.
The UNA men's basketball team has posted a 446-143 home record over four decades. The Lion’s initial game against St. Bernard College ended in defeat on Nov. 18, but few opposing teams since have left Flowers Hall triumphant. In 1977 UNA posted a perfect 16-0 record at home and the 1984 Lions went 19-1 in Flowers Hall en route to a third place national finish.
Flowers Hall has also been the scene for nine men’s NCAA Division II playoff games, including regional tournaments in the 1976-77, 1980-81 and 1983-84 campaigns, and quarterfinal games in 1976-77, 1979-80 and 1983-84 - with UNA posting a perfect 9-0 record in those contests.
Flowers Hall is also the home of the Lion volleyball team, where the program has hosted numerous NCAA tournaments and has posted a 257-35 record at home since the 1995 season. The Lions’ home was also the host of the first-ever GSC volleyball tournament in 1982.
In 1985 the original synthetic floor was replaced with a new synthetic floor. Also, in that same year a new four-sided scoreboard was added to enhance the Lion’s home court. In 1989 new theater seating was installed on the home side for season-ticket holders.
In the summer of 2004, a new maple wood floor was installed, along with new scoreboards. More recently, the flooring was altered in the summer of 2008 to adjust the three-point lines to meet new NCAA rules. The men’s line was pushed back, but the women shot from the same three-point arc until 2011. In 2013, the flooring was sanded, repainted and restained, while the new UNA athletic logo was added at center court. The old three-point line used for women's games (prior to 2011) and high school games was also removed.
As the Lions transitioned into NCAA Division I and the ASUN Conference prior to the 2018-19 season, Flowers Hall got a complete $2.2 million makeover. The wood flooring was completely replaced. All seating was also removed. Wooden bleachers were replaced with plastic purple seating on the North, South and East upstairs areas. All lower-area seating was replaced with purple chairback seats. New video scoring tables were added, along with a pair of 18’x10’ video boards as the arena was updated to host future ESPN broadcasts. Upstairs seating on the West side was also removed to make from for the Steve and Sheila Pierce Hospitality Suite, which features a 2,400 square foot common area that overlooks the court and two rows of box seats for donors, special guests and VIPs.
