In basketball, free throws or foul shots are unopposed attempts to score points from a restricted area on the court (the free throw line; informally known as the foul line or sometimes charity stripe), and are generally awarded after a foul on the shooter by the opposing team (although free throws are also awarded on non-shooting fouls if the team that is fouling is over the foul limit). Each successful free throw is worth one point, and sometimes more than one is awarded. For shooting fouls that occur inside the 3-point line, 2 free throws are awarded and for shooting fouls that occur outside the 3-point line, 3 free throws are awarded. 1 free throw is awarded on And-1 plays.
