The Houston Christian Huskies, known before the 2022–23 season as the Houston Baptist Huskies, refers to the sports teams of Houston Christian University (HCU). With the inception of the athletics program at the university in 1960 until 1990, the Huskies were a part of the NCAA. After playing for seventeen years as a member of the NAIA, the Huskies began play as an NCAA Division I team again in 2007.
After one year of independent status in the NCAA, HCU joined the Great West Conference in 2008. In 2013 the team moved to the Southland Conference.
On September 21, 2022, the university announced that it had changed its name from Houston Baptist University to Houston Christian University, effective immediately. The school remains Baptist-affiliated, and the nickname of Huskies did not change.[1]
