Collegiate career[]

As a No. 15 forward prospect according to, Pinkston committed to Villanova after also being recruited by other schools such as Tennessee, St. John's, Seton Hall, Rutgers, and Marquette. He said he was excited by the idea of playing with Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns, who were the two top scorers in Pinkston's first playing season with Villanova.

Pinkston unfortunately did not see the court for his freshman year after he was suspended for the entire season due to an assault charge. In his redshirt freshman year, he was one of the top rebounders on the Wildcats but his team finished the season with a disappointing 13-19 record.

As a sophomore, Pinkston quickly jumped to the top of the scoring category on Villanova after both Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns left college. Villanova reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the season as the best unranked team in theBig East Conference. Head coach Jay Wright continued to coach the Villanova men's basketball team, his 12th season.
