The Mountain East Conference (MEC) is a conference that competes in NCAA Division II. It was founded in 2013 and currently has 12 members, mostly in West Virginia with other members in Maryland and Ohio.
The MEC is an offshoot of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC), a league that had operated mainly in that state since 1924. In 2012, the nine football-playing members of that league, all but one from West Virginia (the exception being Seton Hill, located in Pennsylvania), announced plans to leave and form a new conference. By the time the MEC was established, Seton Hill had opted to join the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC); the MEC filled out its charter membership with legacy WVIAC member Wheeling Jesuit (now Wheeling), Ohio schools Notre Dame and Urbana; and Virginia–Wise (UVA–Wise).
Since its formation, the MEC has gained and lost three members. In 2019, charter member Shepherd left for the PSAC and UVA–Wise left for the South Atlantic Conference. They were replaced by legacy WVIAC member Davis & Elkins and Division III upgrader Frostburg State. In 2020, charter member Urbana closed due to financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, while another legacy WVIAC member, Alderson Broaddus, joined.
