The Northeast Conference (known as the NEC) is a conference participating in the NCAA's Division I, with member institutions in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1981 as the ECAC Metro, with men's basketball as the league's only sponsored sport. In 1985, the league began sponsoring additional sports, and in 1988 changed to its current name.
