A quadruple double is a statistic in basketball where a player score double digits in four of the following categories in a single game: points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks.

It is one of rarest and most coveted statistics in basketball, having only been achieved four times in NBA history, with all of these being within the time period of 1974-1994.

History[]

The first quadruple double was achieved by Chicago Bulls Center Nate Thurmond, in his first ever game as a Bull in a 122-115 overtime victory. It should be noted that it is possible that older players such as Wilt Chamberlain have also achieved such a feat, however as statistics such as blocks weren't officially recorded in that time, this is uncertain.

The next quadruple double was achieved by Alvin Robertson on February 18, 1986. This is the only quadruple double achieved by a Guard in NBA history, as he recorded 20 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals in a 120-114 win against the Suns.

Four years later, Hakeem Olajuwon became the third ever player to achieve a quadruple double following a 120-94 victory against the Bucks. Olajuwon also notably almost achieved another quadruple double in an earlier victory over the Golden State Warriors, where he was just 1 assist away from achieving the coveted statistic.

4 years later, in his scoring title season, David Robinson would score 34 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 blocks in a 115-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons. This is the last officially recognized quadruple double recorded.

Notably, Tim Duncan came two blocks shy of achieving a quadruple double in the 2003 NBA Finals against the New Jersey Nets, with some speculating that that two of his blocks were credited to other people, meaning that he would've achieved history's first quadruple double in the Finals if the statistics were recorded correctly.
