Sterling "Scoot" Henderson (born February 3, 2004) is an American professional basketball player who plays at Point Guard for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played high school basketball at Carlton J. Kell High School in Marietta, Georgia, he chose to forgo college signing with the NBA G League Ignite at 17. After two seasons he entered the Draft, he was selected 3rd overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers.
High School career[]
Henderson played basketball for Carlton J. Kell High School in Marietta. During his freshman season, he came off the bench and played alongside his brother, C. J., a senior on the team. In February 2020, during his sophomore season, Henderson scored a then career-high 49 points and made the game-winning shot in a 92–91 overtime win over Miller Grove High School. He ultimately led his team to the semi-finals, averaging 24 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. He ultimately bypassed his senior season to play professionally. He was ranked as a 5 star recruit, and as the 2nd best point guard in the 2021 class.
Professional career[]
NBA G-League[]
On May 21, 2021, Henderson signed a two-year, $1 million contract with the NBA G League Ignite, a developmental team affiliated with the NBA G League that began in the previous year. On November 17, 2021, Henderson made his debut with eight points and six rebounds in a 115–103 win against the South Bay Lakers. At age 17, he became the youngest player in G League history. In his second game, on November 26, Henderson recorded a career-high 31 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 112–110 loss to the Santa Cruz Warriors.
On October 22nd, Henderson played in a 2 exhibition games against Victor Wembanyama, another top prospect and the projected #1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. In the first game, he recorded 28 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds in a victory but ultimately left the 2nd game after getting a bone bruise in his right knee.
He ultimately averaged 17.6 points, 6.4 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game in 25 appearances from 2021 to 2023.
NBA career[]
Portland Trail-Blazers[]
The Portland Trail Blazers selected Henderson with the third overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. He made his 2023 NBA Summer League debut on July 7 against the Houston Rockets with 15 points, five rebounds, and six assists. He left the game early due to a shoulder injury and sat out the rest of Summer League.
On October 25th, Henderson debuted in the NBA regular season, scoring 11 points and 4 assists in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. On November 1, Henderson suffered a sprained right ankle and bone bruise against the Detroit Pistons and was sidelined until November 21, where he was assigned to G League affiliate Rip City Remix to return to court conditioning. On January 14, Henderson put up a career-high 33 points along with nine assists in a 127–116 loss to the Phoenix Suns.
