Stephen F. Austin State University (commonly SFA or Stephen F) is a public university located in Nacogdoches, Texas. Founded as a teachers' college in 1923, the university was named after one of Texas' founding fathers, Stephen F. Austin. Its campus resides on part of the homestead of another Texas founding father, Thomas Jefferson Rusk.
SFA is one of four public universities in Texas not affiliated with a university system.
Stephen F. Austin is rivaled by Northwestern State University.
SFA colors are purple and white. In tribute to the forest industry which is a major component of the area's economy, the men's athletic teams are called Lumberjacks, and women's teams are known as Ladyjacks. SFA's teams participate in NCAA Division I (FCS for football) in the Southland Conference through the 2020–21 school year, after which they will move to the Western Athletic Conference.
