State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNYSB), also known as Stony Brook University (SB), is a public research university located in Stony Brook, New York (on the north side of Long Island, about 65 miles east of Manhattan, New York). Stony Brook is the second highest ranked of the four universities in the State University of New York system, and has an enrollment of more than 22,000 students. The University operates two SUNY-wide research centers (the Institute for Theoretical Physics, and the Marine Sciences Research Center). The University also operates Brookhaven National Labs under contract from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The varsity sports teams were formerly known as the Patriots, but were renamed and are currently known as the Seawolves. The basketball teams play at the Sports Complex. Stony Brook joined NCAA Division I in 1999, with all sports except football competing in the America East Conference. The school moved to the Colonial Athletic Association in July 2022; its football team had competed in CAA Football, the technically separate football league operated by the all-sports CAA, since 2013.
