The UT Arlington men's basketball team is an NCAA Division I college basketball team competing in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).[1] Home games are played at College Park Center, located on University of Texas at Arlington's campus in Arlington. The team appeared in the 2008 NCAA tournament, losing against the #1 seed Memphis in the first round (Memphis was later forced to vacate the win due to infractions committed by the program).
Team history[]
The Mavericks are one of the founding teams of the Southland Conference (SLC), which began with five institutions on March 15, 1963.[2] Although only 14 of 51 seasons have resulted in an overall winning record, 5 of the past 10 seasons have winning records along with a tie for the 2004 regular season champion and a 2008 conference tournament championship that led to their first NCAA Tournament appearance.[3]
UTA moved from the SLC to the WAC after the 2011–12 season, but only stayed in the WAC for one season, joining the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) in 2013. During its SBC tenure, it was one of only two non-football members of that league, alongside Little Rock. During the early-2020s conference realignment, the SBC actively sought to expand with more football-sponsoring schools, succeeding in 2022 by adding four such schools to bring its football membership to 14. Both of the non-football schools left in 2022, with UTA rejoining the WAC and Little Rock joining the Ohio Valley Conference.
Facilities[]
The Mavericks currently play at Texas Hall, which is a 3,300 seat theater on the campus. The teams play on the stage, and fans can watch the game from either the theater seats or the bleacher section.
A new arena called the College Park Center with a seating capacity of 6,500 will host the team in 2012.[4][5] The facility will be located on the eastern side of the campus along with new housing, parking, and retail developments.
