The United States Basketball Association (USBA) is a proposed professional minor division men's basketball league which was first announced in July 2007 and has yet to commence play as of March 2010.
Background[]
The USBA's planned basketball season begins in early April and concludes in early July. The league was founded in July 2007 by Duane Allen Jenkins, President and Chief Executive Officer. The USBA league headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia. The league was originally set to begin play in April 2009,[1][2] but the start was delayed.[3] The poor economy prompted the USBA to rename April 8, 2011 as the league's inaugural season opening date.[citation needed]
The USBA currently retains principal ownership of all league team. While it planned to initiate its first season with eighteen basketball teams spread out over ten southern states and the District of Columbia, March 2010 reports stated that only 12 or 14 teams would begin play.[4][5]. Each USBA team will play a thirty game schedule, fifteen home games and fifteen away games. In keeping with the tradition of top level professional basketball, the USBA will host a mid season All Star Classic basketball game. The USBA has selected Atlanta ,Georgia as a permanent site for its championship games. The 2011 USBA Championship game is scheduled to played on July 10, 2011. The USBA league championship trophy was fashioned and named the Willie Joe Hunter Memorial Championship Trophy.
According to the USBA, the cost to operate the USBA for one basketball season is $2,500,000.00.[citation needed] The Board of Directors will decide to issue the approval to fund the season when they convene in July 2010. The management has received criticism for delaying the start of the USBA basketball.
Other groups[]
An organization called the "United States Basketball Association", which does not appear to be affiliated with the league announced in 2007,[6] has sponsored an annual youth tournament in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which started in 2007.[7][8][9]
The group attempting to start this league also attempted to start a women's league, called WUSBA, in March 2010 for the 2010 summer season. The league official announced they would attempt to start the league again for 2011 on May 27, 2010.
